For my SEO friends and my business owners that prefer to keep a watch on everything "under the hood", I have the perfect tracking tools that you can use to ensure that you are keeping up with SERP trends to stay on top of your competition!
When owning a website, whether that is personal or business, if you want that free organic search, you need to make sure that you are on trend. Think of these trends being similar to the stock market, your favorite sport team or current political movements.
Just like most of you, I wake up in the morning coffee in hand and check on what Search Engine Result Page Algorithm updates happened and plan on how that looks like for my company that day.
On June 26, 2021, I woke up to the Google's Link Spam Algorithm update and how impactful it would be for my client's and my own website. If you don't know about the algorithm, Google tightened it's belt about what it's standards of backlinks and internal links. My team and I sifted through all of the backlinks for our client's that day to come up with a plan attack.
Tracking Tools
Every 24 hours, Moz tracks a series of 10,000 keywords, handpicked for accuracy to chart across the world as there are different searches in different areas. They will check the Top 10 results for each keyword and rate the day by the change of ranking in a given day. This temperature rating works similarly to the Fahrenheit temperature ratings where 70 degrees is about perfect for most and in the SEO world 70 degrees is a normal day. Anything hotter will result in a huge shift for most website owners.
How to use it?
I will check out the temperature for the day. If I find that it is hotter than normal, I will start my research. You can also take a look at the "big 10 Influence" to see how their rankings are shifting. It is an excellent way of checking to see if your search results are normal or if there is something that you need to change.
I am not as much of a fan of this one but I want to include it because it does provide a simplistic chart that is easy for anyone to read. They track the changes in Google and Bing by comparing the day change average with the month median.
Saving the best for last, I love SEMRush for literally everything SEO (well not so much keyword research but that's another blog for another day). This is not a free tool however, they do provide a free version but it does not tell you nearly everything you need to know about SEO. This is the tool that I will use for all of my research, along with a good Google search.
The tool that I have will show me the change and rate the change per day. Conveniently, I can use the side by side graph for my other website's that I am monitoring so I can see if this a dip in website traffic is due to a real change or if I should just ride it out.
